3-Month Business Internship

The Global Education Association and Teleprime along with  professors from College of DuPage and Illinois Institute of Technology are pleased to offer the Business Internship Program for International Students. This is a three-month program where students will spend four days per week in an internship.  In addition, there will be classes on American Business and History, plus some weekend cultural tours. 


This program is designed for college and high school students with good English skills. Students will have a chance to get real-world office experience in the United States.  In addition, students will learn to use Business English in a day-to-day environment.  Many of the internships will be at non-profit companies and government agencies where students will have a chance to work on important long-term projects. 

The skills developed in this program will give participants the confidence and ability to work with others in an English-speaking environment and students will gain an understanding of the American workplace.  The focus of this program will be on students improving their business English skills and understanding how government, non-profit agencies and business works in the United States. 


Courses in business, American History and Culture will be taught by instructors from the College of DuPage, Illinois Institute of Technology and other schools. Courses will introduce the stock market in the United States, Innovation, Leadership Politics, History and Culture.


Program Requirements

Students must

  1. have a good command of English to participate in this program

  2. arrive to the internship on the days scheduled

  3. always come with a positive and energetic attitude

  4. be able to work efficiently

  5. be kind to those with whom you work and your boss


Dates

At the convenience of the sponsoring school or students.

 

Weekly Schedule

Monday thru Thursday

9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Internship at a local company or agency.


Once per month on Thursday Night

6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Business, Politics class.


WeekendsCultural Tours

 

One Saturday per month

Group tours to cultural sites in Chicago, including

  1. Navy Pier

  2. Art Institute of Chicago

  3. University of Chicago and Oriental Institute and more


Internship

Students will complete a student profile form prior to arrival where they will list areas of interest and skills.  This information will be used to match students with their internships.          


Past internships and jobs include

  1. Equip for Equality – Legal work with light computer

  2. CreateASoft Inc. – Database work

  3. International Visitors Center of Chicago – light office work

  4. Villa Park Police Department – Ride with police to emergencies, practice shooting a gun, learn law enforcement

  5. Glen Ellyn Historical Society – Research, office work, spreadsheets

  6. WGN Radio – Assist with radio production and news stories

  7. BridgePoint Technologies – E-Commerce and web development


Home-Stay

Students will live with families in the Chicago area.  Students will eat meals with their home-stay families and attend family outings which might include church on Sunday and other activities.  All home-stay families have either worked with GEA before or been referred by trustworthy people.  Students will take public transportation to their internships.  Unlimited ride passes for the trains and buses will be issued to each student for local travel.


Internship Program Includes

  1. Experience of what it is like to be in the Corporate World of America

  2. Living with an American family for three months and learning proper etiquette

  3. Improving your English by communicating with English-speaking locals

  4. Cultural tours of Historical landmarks of the Chicagoland area.

  5. Visits to the top Universities in Illinois

  6. Meeting with a University financial advisor for scholarships/grants for student loans.

  7. Learn what it takes to get a job in America.

  8. American History and Cultural classes.

  9. Partake in American sports.

  10. Airport pick-up and drop-off.

  11. Advising throughout your Visa process from America.

  12. Comprehensive health insurance coverage.

  13. Transportation to your home stay, internship, and college.

  14. Free calls to your family back home.

  15. A pre-paid cell phone to use only in America.

  16. Three meals a day.

  17. Option to stay with an American family, or a dorm with another student of same sex.

  18. Internships are given in a friendly environment.

  19. Provided with some school supplies for classes/internship (such as: notebook, pen, and paper).

  20. Assistance with applying for admissions to U.S. Colleges/Universities.  (If you are interested).


Internship Program Does NOT Include

  1. Any costs in your country during your Visa process

  2. Airfare coverage or any travel to the airport from your country

  3. Travel costs to out of state regions from internship

  4. Travel cost for personal leisure (includes wanting to go with friends, movie, dinner, etc.)

  5. Dental coverage

  6. Optical coverage

  7. Medical coverage for any pre-existing conditions


What is expected of you if chosen for internship

  1. Arrive to the internship on the days scheduled

  2. Always come with a positive and energetic attitude

  3. Be able to work efficiently

  4. Be kind to those you work with and your boss
